Language
Language is one of the best communication tools, which includes our identity, amazing facts, history, culture, lifestyle etc. Everyone has their own language, which we call mother tongue.
There are roughly 6,500 spoken languages in the world today. According to oral tradition, human language probably began to evolve 100,000 years ago. Every language has its own unique special identity. For example, the Hawaiian language has over 200 different words for "RAIN"
But the sad thing is, did you know 2,400 of the world’s languages are in the danger zone? It’s about to die. According to the UN, there are approximately 6,000 (out of 6500) languages that risk becoming extinct.
HOW A LANGUAGE WILL DIE?
One of the main reasons for the extinction of a language is that native speakers of that language are being bilingual. Bilingual means speaking in two languages.
When we talk with others in our native language, unknowingly, we often use English words or some other language words, even though we have those words in our native language.
On average, people only use a few hundred words in daily conversation, while most languages have more than 50,000 words.
If a community becomes bilingual, then we will forget to use our native words. Then we gradually, it will create a situation where we can no longer speak without the support of other languages. It will lead our language to die.
We can see the influence of other languages like Sanskrit. Hindi, English in our languages.
Are you bilingual?
Learning new languages is a wonderful thing. We should learn new languages, but at the same time, we should speak our mother tongue properly without the help of other languages.
Over 20,000 new French words are created each year.
According to new innovations and development, we have to find new words and bring them into practice. If not, we cannot protect our language and take it to the next generation.
- 2,000 of the 6500 languages have fewer than 1,000 speakers.
- About 30% of English words come from French.
Am I killing my language by being bilingual? Is it possible..?
