My VBS Experience
Have you ever been a VBS director? Here I would like to share my VBS experience. VBS directors are the one who conducts the Vacation Bible School among children in different places like churches, educational institutions etc.
Today is May 2nd, for the past 7 years, I never spent this day at my house. Every year on these days I started to live a new life as a VBS Director with new people around me. This is the most expected day in every VBS Directors life, after attending the VBS Director training all the VBS Directors gets the enthusiasm to be ready for this day. started the countdown and started preparing for the great VBS festival.
It is not 1st May it starts with April 30th evening with the teachers meeting. I always start the VBS teachers meeting with fear because the first impression is the best.
During the teachers meeting itself, teachers may have a chance to evaluate the team’s quality, so as a director I use to go a little forward to them and make a phone call to the previous year Directors and make a complete enquirer about the church, what they like? what they don’t like? positive, negative etc.
MY FIRST VBS
During my 1st VBS in 2014, I went to CSI Christ Church, Salem. On the 30th evening, as a team we are preparing for the teachers meeting, my team leader told me to keep a table at the centre as a part of an arrangement. In obedience to my team leader, I took a table from one corner to keep it at the centre. At that time one of the church workers who was helping us with the arrangement shouted at me and came closer to me very fast. I was a little scared and I was thinking that I did something wrong. He came close to me and said “Please you don’t strain yourself to do this kind of works we will take care of it” and took the table from my hand even I requested for so many times. This incident does not mean the VBS Directors are not doing heavy work but the way people took care of it during the time of ministry was so good. Some VBS teachers who’re elder give respect, the polite way of talking is to make us realize the importance of the role and impact that Christ makes.
DAYS TO BUILD RELATIONSHIP
One thing that I learned from my leader, first three days of VBS is time to build a relationship with children. Memorizing their names, talking to the child, spending time with them etc., This three-day relationship building helps to balance the VBS for the next seven days. Building relationships helps to guide them better in Christ within these ten days.

MY FIRST RESPONSIBILITY
The first responsibility given to me during my 1st VBS is making an attendance graph chart. Chart works are one of the main works in VBS. Every day of VBS needs different charts like theme charts, memory verses charts, special day charts, games chart etc., writing in a chart is a talent. I am not a calligraphist but I love doing chart works. Chart works show our dedication towards the work. Chart works help the children to understand what we are teaching.
CO-VBS DIRECTORS
Initially when we talk or when we meet the first time, we may be strangers but at the end of the tenth day surely, we will be close friends. VBS is not only developing the children in Christ but also everyone who took part in it.
I heard some of the directors experienced miss understanding among the team members which leads the whole VBS into trouble, but my good time I did not face this kind of problem in my VBS instead all my co-directors are very mature even though they are young.
but the saddest thing is after these ten days of family relationship it is very difficult to meet them again. But during the VBS we as a team we discuss, we laugh, we pray, we have secrets, we share our life experiences, we play etc.,
SPECIAL DAYS
Every day in the VBS are a special day, also we conduct special meeting according to class especially for junior inter senior. The beautiful thing about this special meeting we can see many of the children commit their life to Christ and decide to live for Christ.
Also some special days like love feast, inspection day is very serious days of VBS.
MAIN PLAY
One of the things which give sanctification is teaching them in the general assembly. Guiding them to walk towards God in various ways like action song, skit, Memory verses, storytelling, prayer etc., Also helping and encouraging the teachers every day by teacher’s devotion.
SOMETHING SPECIAL
Although perhaps this is not important it is impossible to leave this topic, it is called food. The ten days of food and the accommodation was taken care of by the church or the educational institution, sometimes they will order hotel foods, sometimes house visit. some kind-hearted people will invite for a meal. most it will be from teachers or students’ families. and they will prepare a heavy delicious food for us. After having the food, we will have a nice conversation and prayer. But sometimes these house visits may swallow up practice timings. which makes it difficult to follow the timing schedule.
THE GREATEST TASK
The greatest task for every VBS director to maintain the schedule. Not only VBS timings also the director’s schedule. The most important thing is maintaining the timing of the final program which is the final task given to every VBS director. the final success of the VBS lies in the Final day program.
DAYS TO SAY GOODBYE
As I told before the first three days are the days of building relationship same likewise last three days are the days of maintaining distance from children. Which make the children understand that directors are just tools of God the true relationship we have to build is with Christ. Building the relationship until the last day may make the situation difficult. It would be sad if the children could not accept the separation. Some children use to cry after the final program, which I don’t like because the purpose of being there is not to introduce ourselves but to introduce Christ.
FINALLY
VBS trained me a lot, I learned a lot of things not only spiritual but many life skills like time management, event management, public speaking, etc. VBS gave me a lot of new relationships, Surly every VBS are a milestone in my life. This year I missed badly.
Even though I feel bad for not being able to organise this year VBS but I feel happy to share this experience with you all.
